Radio Licences

Any business using a radio station, radio apparatus or any radio transmitting and receiving apparatus requires a radio licence. These licences outline frequencies and assures interference with other stations do not occur.

New Licences

All prospective licensees must submit proof of payment, and where necessary the Certificate of Registration to the RA in a timely manner.

The proof of payment should be sent no less than two weeks before the licence is to be issued. Where possible individuals must supply the RA with proof of payment before they are in receipt of the certificate of registration.

Renewal Licences

Licences up for renewal that have no change to the equipment, must send an e‐mail to the RA requesting the renewal of the licence no less than one month before the licence is to be renewed.

Where there have been changes to the equipment, licence holders must provide a completed renewal application to the RA no less than one month before the licence is to be renewed.

Licence holders must provide the RA with proof of payment no less than two weeks before the renewal licence is to be issued.

Once the RA is in receipt of the application and all supporting documentation, it will continue with the issuance of the licence. All documentation received by 12PM Bermuda time will be processed within 2 business days following the date of submission. Documentation received after 12 PM Bermuda time will be processed within 3 business days following the date of submission.

Class 3 Amateur Radio Licence

The Class 3 Amateur Radio Licence is for a technical service or hobby radio, also known as a ham radio. The radio licence is required for non-commercial communication for competition, self-training, and wireless experimentation.

Class 3 Amateur radio licences require the prospective licensee to provide a competency certificate before the licence is issued.

Class 4 Two-Way Radio Licence

The Class 4 Two-Way Radio Licence is for fixed and handheld business radios. This radio licence is required for two-way communication to be used in a commercial capacity by taxi operators, hospitals, industrial facilities, or event companies, etc.

Class 5 (Small Craft) VHF Radio Licence

The Class 5 VHF (Very High Frequency) Radio Licence is required for marine communication on personal or commercial boats as a safety measure to communicate with marina operators, other boats and draw bridges. The licence is issued with a radio callsign and Maritime Mobile Service Identifier (MMSI) which can be programmed into an EPIRB.

Class 6 Aeronautical Radio Licence

The Class 6 Aeronautical Radio Licence is for aircraft radio equipment. This radio licence is required to operate radio transceiver equipment, ground-air communications, and radar.

Class 6 Aeronautical licences require a Certificate of Registration from Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority.

Class 8 Personal (CB) Radio Licence

The Class 8 Personal (CB) Radio Licence is a short-range or low powered radio. The abbreviation “CB” stands for ”Citizen Band”. This radio licence is required for private use in homes or offices locally.

Class 9 Maritime Mobile Service Licence

There are four categories for the Class 9 radio licence:

  • GMDSS (Class 1) Radio Licence: A radio station on a ship that is fitted with a type of GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) and is allowed to operate in sea areas A1, A2, A3, and A4.
  • GMDSS (Class 2) Radio Licence: A radio station on a ship that is fitted with a GMDSS and is allowed to operate in sea areas A1 and A2.
  • Restricted Radio Licence: A radio station on board using specified frequencies in the marine mobile service.
  • Restricted VHF Radio Licence: A radio station on board operating on the VHF marine band and other specified frequencies in the marine mobile service.

The Class 10 Radio Licence is for usage of all radio receivers not designed primarily for the reception of Broadcast Services transmissions.

Class 11 Aeronautical and Maritime Land Radio Licence

The Class 11 Radio Licence is for an aeronautical or maritime land radio. This licence is required for radio communication between aeronautical land stations and aircraft stations or between aircraft stations. Also, between coast stations and ship stations or between ship stations.
